Veterans’ Services

Veterans’ Services

CD1 is home to more than 57,000 veterans of our armed forces.  Problems with veterans’ services are deeply felt in CD1.  Our veterans must be protected from misguided efforts to privatize the Veterans Administration.

Preserving Medicare

Preserving Medicare

CD1’s population is older, with about 20% of the population qualifying for Medicare, and a large number of people within 10 years of qualifying.  LaMalfa voted for GOP efforts to cut Medicare spending over the next 10 years that will hurt many CD1 residents.

Low, Stagnant Wages

Low, Stagnant Wages

The median income for a family of four in CD1 is less than $47,000, far below the state average.  In a period in which the average state wage rose 11% and LaMalfa represented the north state, CD1 wages rose just 1%.  We need a new rural economy.

Children in Poverty

Children in Poverty

CD1 has a higher poverty rate than the state as a whole.  About 23% of the children in CD1 live in poverty.  Instead of taking bold steps to help these children, LaMalfa has voted to cut food stamps.

Rural Broadband

Rural Broadband

The giant telecom companies have not wired rural areas for high speed broadband, forcing many CD1 residents into the choice of paying exorbitant amounts for slow satellite access or not getting internet access at all.  Internet access is essential to the development of rural economies.  LaMalfa has done nothing about the foot-dragging by telecom companies.

Conflict Between State and Federal Cannabis Laws

Conflict Between State and Federal Cannabis Laws

Cannabis has long been permitted for medicinal purposes and was recently permitted for adult recreational use under California law but federal law still treats cannabis as if it were just as dangerous as heroin.  Federal law effectively shuts cannabis producers out of the banking system, leaving producers and dispensaries to deal with large amounts of cash and the crime and security issues that presents.  Everyone in CD1 would benefit from a resolution of this conflict.
